the other corner of my trip I: Update on the preparations and travel
Many paths lead from Nigeria, but to come back here one needs a "Re-entry Visas. And to that end we had to accomplish a long journey.
But it started with the idea for the spent on work days of Christmas, in which the Hearts of Gold was full of donors, and after some discussions with "Mummy, Mummy" us to take a vacation and far away from the volunteers and a total for the few tourists Nigeria's major destinations Kano, Calabar and Yankari National Park in the exact opposite corner of Nigeria across the country to go to Maiduguri. This idea then arose the fantastic episode idea of using the proximity to Chad, to get there to make a small detour. "We" are Vitali (a volunteer who moved into the Hearts of Gold , but just before the trip again joined the project) and myself. However, we
had some hardships for this goal, discussions and trips to take us. At first we said ICYE (the Nigerian National Committee of my sending organization) that travel to foreign countries not only on the visa is possible. Of this we were not impressed us and we were looking for a Chad message about which we had completely different information found in my two guides and the Internet. At the former site, but no message and the residents had said they had moved, some people suggested to Abuja, others called us several other addresses in Lagos. Thus, we accomplished a veritable odyssey through Victoria Iceland (the embassy district of Lagos) and the Cameroon Embassy, we were finally told the correct position. The Chadian embassy consisted of a living room with a fairly loose acting ambassador in it, the told us the conditions for the very cheap visa and was very pleased with our visit. Then we went to the Immigration Office, where we look more closely informed about the re-entry visas. This should cost a lot of money, as if the almost 500 €, which we previously had to pay even for the normal visa, not enough. Then we talked again with the ICYE us and the matter was once eaten, we got our passports from ICYE and picked us up and re-entry visa. On our Seminar half but then we got a week before the scheduled start of the trip a little too late from Germany reported that Chad is not from Weltwärts volunteers must be visited, just like a bunch of other West African countries. So we were at the low point, but then quickly decided to contest planned our trip as then but to travel instead from Chad through Cameroon in order not to waste our Re-Entry. In retrospect, we were pretty happy with this decision.
Next Sunday, 21 February, it went off with a Busunternehemen. We drove about 12 hours to Abuja in the center of Nigeria, where we spent the night, the one for armed robbery rather should not spend in the car on the streets. The following day the journey continued by Jos and Bauchi. We have during the trip by driving really, many of the numerous growing areas of rain forest on grass and rocky landscapes around Abuja and brown prairie on the cool Jos Plateau, to the savannah Bauchis that was up to Maiduguri always barren and dry. On our trip to Lake Chad, we went even to the Nigerian branch of the Sahel. In Bauchi in any case we were transported by the bus company in a bush taxi. The ride in the taxi was the warm, dry desert air, the Muslim music from the CD player, riding an endless straight road through the nothing in the savannah, on the contrary we were in bright fabrics coated man in the middle between two villages that were already half an hour away by car, quite an experience.

Hearts of Gold
In Hearts of Gold, much has changed, as has also changed my perspective on the Hearts of Gold pretty.
Some children have now moved fully, including the disabled children (mainly Zerebralparäse ill) and the babies. The older children move more irregular at the discretion of the Director of their sleeping place. At the moment, live and sleep the elders back in the old building and the smaller ones in the New. It was interesting to observe that those children who had been accustomed to sleep because of bed shortages in the old building on the bare floor, in the new building, which contains more than enough cots, prefer to sleep on the floor that already offers through the carpet more comfortable when the old vinyl floor. Upstairs is a huge area has been declared to donate space in which all donations are now being taken from below, so that new visitors will see the bulk of donations and do not donate so on. The old lower chamber was then turned into donations to the office to let with desks and computers around the institution appear more professional. The completely furnished reception on the other hand is inexplicably still not in use.
"Mummy, Mummy" is significantly challenged with the task of emerging fields. On request, she assured that she is looking for a manager, it decreases the number of tasks. The only problem is just unfortunate that, after her long stay in Great Britain no longer really trust Nigerians and also not have enough money to pay for a foreign-trained workers. Therefore will probably continue to drag on everything.
The lack of confidence in their country men and women come to our director to the fore by the fact that they are now all over the building and outdoor surveillance cameras set up to work Check the staff to be able to. They took this decision well after it had come into the lounge of the children (which happens quite rarely) and all the teachers and nurses vorfand asleep. Was then made of the emotion out just fired the entire staff without having replacement. Thus, we were extremely understaffed the next day and had some difficulties. Meanwhile the staff but has been increased again.

Nigerian NGOs
Great fashion here in Lagos seems to be the NGO-business. And I call it quite deliberately "Business".
This city has a lot of NGOs, that founders with such a beautiful name as "Executive Director" and decorate the rise through the establishment terribly important to people and make terribly important things for a good cause. Many of these NGOs live on donations, can look at meetings and discussing that more or less important issues. I have also heard of counterexamples, but in a city where money and fame is more important than many others, we name the NGO unfortunately very often used to generate exactly this money and this glory. I was sitting in meetings where I've seen how much food is wasted there, so I came with a Mitfreiwilligen the idea that meaningful NGO should deal with it once to go to all the meetings, the discarded Food pick up and distribute it in the slums of Lagos. This is a waste problem occurs here mainly to extremely wealthy districts, even though I'm not saying that it does not occur in Germany. Here the problem appears to be twice as difficult because the differences "poor" and "rich" here are so close together, creating a stark contrast.
Likewise, I will not deny that the name "NGO" could also be abused in Germany, but I experience it for yourself here.

Ogun State
mitlerweile I have of my weekends have made some relocates to the neighboring, more rural state, "Ogun State". Only there is one is clear how crowded, dirty and noisy Lagos.
It runs from the outskirts of Lagos a half to two hours on public buses (VW Van), a ride in which it often times live goats or chickens. On of "potholes" (potholes) on roads, we go see past huge, luxurious private complex of churches, which includes universities and foothills of the rainforest.
Abeokuta
... means "under the mountain" and is the capital of Ogun States, which extends around the Olumo Rock, which is the main attraction of the city. This mountain, which looks like an accumulation of brown rocks, you can climb up and has a beautiful view over the city that gave us a little reminiscent of southern Italy. According to legend, a Yoruba tribe fled from a civil war among these rocks, where they could survive. The cave is still there and next door to the so-called witches Yorubagöttern as much for the survival of their people to sacrifice. The first time we are here with the host brother of Cornelius, another volunteer, drove the car. Since this boozy after last night but not as good, felt had to Cornelius and Vitali us then without a license, the potholes and traffic through the rugged city of Lagos through go home. Probably a unique experience!
Shagamu
lives here and works on a volunteer ICYE that I have ever visited. To the city is not much to say interesting, but apparently you will be struck that in the rural area almost every weekend held a celebration to come to the big part of the "village".
Ipara
This piece is really just a village and here you can fill up good energy for Lagos. Because a friend has a different voluntary organization and allows us to volunteer at the House of organization, living in the currently no volunteers to stay. Two weekends I have been here already and you can really enjoy the silence and doing nothing to cook, and go into nature. Because next door is the beginning of the rain forest, which is not as dense as a real primary forest. The life here is much more relaxed and you could put on the street without having to run over. The first night I was here asleep even problems, as the unaccustomed silence after a full-time noise from Lagos prepares pressure in the ears. Stuff there ...!

II Eating: Snacks and fruits
be as snacks sold everywhere on the streets Pof-Pof, Egg Rolls and dounuts, all made from fried dough, with Pof-Pof are cute little balls in the rings and Donuts Egg Rolls-sized balls with whole egg interior. Otherwise you can get in many places Akara (fried savory snack made from beans flour with Pepe), fried yam and fried potatoes, and Suya (barbecue skewers with spicy crust, which are sold with onions and tomatoes). I personally I like to buy Egg and Bread, white bread, is placed in the sharp-fried scrambled eggs. Bread, there are a total of only as white bread, either very sweet to have in different sizes (Agege-Bread) or as "Sliced Bread" (ordinary bread). In particular there are also some bakeries dunklereres bread and soft rolls.
fruits can be bought at every corner stalls in the women they head to the streets who buy and market. started pineapple, paw-paw (papaya), oranges and tangerines, apples (relatively expensive because they are imported), bananas and mangoes, the season has not yet: There is a choice. I found a market and grapes, but have to be incredibly expensive.

wealth
In Lagos turns to much .... MONEY. For what else to live causes millions of people in such an urban center that offers itself for Nigerians rather low quality of life in terms of cleanliness and air purity? Wealth is the dream of many that go on here. Once you are rich, not only in comfort, or products that improve quality of life invested, but often in prestige projects or technology. Thus we see even on the streets Surulere (ie on the mainland) is often thick jeeps (one would hardly believe how often you encounter here a silver Nissan Pathfinder) with tinted windows, to lobster, which are often painted also striking in yellow .
In any event, many people are more important to have expensive watches, latest mobile phones and chicken cars, than make the effort to improve power and water supply or a complete renovation in the run-down houses.
I, as a die-heart-of-gold employees also get almost daily with how wealth something social, but almost as prestigious in donations social institutions, such as our hospice is invested. The donation itself is then either recorded with a camera crew - also with the white people in the picture - or by a separate camera, the photos you can with the donations, including donors later admirers on his Facebook profile.
(over Facebook in Nigeria could I write, moreover, a separate entry ...)
Unfortunately in Nigeria is generally considered too often as much wealth guarantee happiness. Here you can see even here that the wealth often makes sourness, arrogant and wasteful. I will - as so often - said: ". We are suffering here in Nigeria - We do not have money" (We suffer here in Nigeria - We have no money), I can only say that it still is in Germany rich people rather "suffer", but can you believe it hardly, if not even the other - face to side - richer get added.

after four months
Lagos after four months is exhausting, dirty, polluted and stressful ...
is slowly disappeared, the initial motivation, we have settled in and everything is moving all one can do on my nerves. I've done it now exploring the more rural Ogun State and every time I return to the more intense the perceived poor air, noise, filth on the street and the crushing crowds. We said it again and again: "Back to Hell".
This change in perception is probably a typical low after the initial motivation, which was still fed by other experiences. Be quite realistic I say now (come out of my depth) that neither the Lagos is initially seen through rose-colored glasses Mega City, nor the unfriendly, reaming, smelly and dirty Moloch, as I have learned to know in the fourth month. Compared to other cities, it certainly is a juggernaut, but none, as it must have been almost a decade ago. It has many faces, dirty, clean, friendly, annoying and unfriendly, stressful, healing, dangerous and safe. Lagos is just a curiosity - just as unique and interesting. One can make a picture like this without having been there, you can not imagine the image that results when one of the Eco-Bridge The modern Lagos with its skyscrapers and banking centers in the field of view, but once you get to the page turns, you see the smoking, brown slums of Ijora, which until a deal in the lagoon: Iceland goes to Lagos.

Christmas and New Year's Eve in Lagos Lagos
There is also something of Christmas and the Christmas spirit, but of German Christmas is so far away like the heat here in the snows of Germany. It can be mounted many cheesy Santas and fairy lights, here and there one hears English Christmas time hit, but the atmosphere here is different.
are with the children of the Hearts of Gold, we in the whole of December to countless charitable Christmas parties go, which they, in effect, just like me, even more than had enough, because the parties always loud Nigerian music, people in Teletubby or Winnie the Pooh Costumes (before that had our children pretty scary) lots of food and gifts award by Father Christmas (before our children had more anxiety). Some of these parties were placed directly on the roof of the Hearts of Gold. Actually, the whole month of December is dangerous, because police officers to control more and want more bribes, in order thus to make their Christmas money and supposedly make more profit even thieves want.
Christmas Eve was very German and I solemnly with the other volunteers and potato or Pasta salad spent in Yaba, where most of us. The Christmas day I had to because of high operation of donors in the Hearts of gold work.
New Year, we then set, as our director did not fully understand or admit rather not wanted us on holidays and weekends not have to work and have worked the Christmas season really only voluntary. So I'm with a few volunteers went to the beach where we swam in the new year - with wines and sparklers. A few friends from the beach have then offered a beach hut, where we could stay together. Then we went to Ipara, a small village in Ogun State, where, after all the work and finally Christmas stress could relax again!

a serious and long process has become the converted, because our director, "Mummy Mummy-" the things as already written will be alone in the hand. Taking into account that the new house was built on the Alhaji Masha Road by a South African construction company in just three months, it seems funny that the completed building to date, more than four months after the takeover, is still not ready to move is. Because, besides the death of her son, according to the "Mummy, Mummy" two weeks was not ready, which immediately brought any changes in the new building to a standstill moved in December and tons of "Christmas" parties and large donors out the time to move the project the children in length. What the new building made to collect the children still needs to be restricted really only out the donated stove plates to the gas network to be connected to build the beds and to purchase, reception and set up the Office of the Director and to sort all the donations. For Mummy, Mummy is unfortunately not the right way and you decided to leave the house to European law "Africanise" a little. Ye rich, for example, the three donated furnaces with around 16 hot plates and the 4 gas and electric cookers is not sufficient and they decided to stick with altbewehrten kerosene stove and read for a typical African stem of exposed, pitted walls and corrugated iron roof building, the its lack of symmetry and the fact that by the projecting corrugated iron roof of the building, some windows open no more, on the one hand quite a contrast to the main building is, but look the other main building that is less cool and static, but can be sympathetic.
far been installed curtain rods, carpet down in the children's section, built up and covered the beds, said the porch built, set up three tanks in the living room of the children (for whatever reason there ...) and the reception and the room set up donations. The first thing that was done was by the way, Mummy, Mummy's office with curtains, a desk, pictures, mirrors, desk, sofa, computer with accessories and equip a flat screen on the wall.
The children have since December, almost every day of the new building has been brought to stay there until the evening and since then was in the living room, which contains the remaining space to play, and a mini-slide and two "balls-baths," the originally small TV only in a larger and then converted into a flat-screen plasma TV, which occurs to me what that might be necessary. Overall, I'm in the donations and elsewhere in the house already seen six different TV.
Except the kitchen is the house that is ready to move, but who knows how long it will last ...
How To Do A Choppy Full Fringe
money and prices move
Nigeria's currency is the Naira. Originally produced a 100 Naira Kobo, but nowadays there is no Kobo another Naira, for the smallest currency is the five-naira note. Besides this, there are notes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Naira.
a € you can officially convert to 200 Naira, the usual method here is, in the markets of the many people who are behind you screaming "dollars, dollars, pounds, euros," to have an exchange for € 210-230 Naira. Here you have to be strong but in action.
Lagos Nigeria is quite expensive, but all the products you can get in a huge price range. For an overview, I will list here a few products and their prices:
Some foods you can get here on every street corner, and therefore cost little:
Ca. 4 tomatoes 50N
Ca. 4 onions 50N
pack of instant noodles 40N
"Pure Water"
(water from the plastic bag) 5N
soft drink from the
glass bottle 50N
five biscuits 5-10N
bottle of beer (60cl) approx 200N
In the supermarket you get all these While products for a fixed Price you do not have to bargain for, but which is more expensive.
In road "restaurant" or on the street, one can determine the amount and thus the price itself. Portions that seem normal cost, as follows:
rice stew, Bohen and Plantain: 200N
porridge with soup and stew 80N
(Amala, Eba and Fufu)
porridge with soup and stew 120N
(Pounded Yam)
Spaghetti Stew and salad with beans
220N 80N 120N
Bread and Eggs (bread with omelette)
Snacks:
Puff-Puff
(A small Hefebällchen) 5N
Big Puff-puff, filled with egg 50 N
Plantain disc / fried yam /
Akara (fried Bohnenteig) 5-10N
Suya (barbecue skewer with tomatoes and onions
) 200N 80-150N
Pineapple Peeled Orange 20 N
apple 50N
Ca. 8 bananas 150N
clothes you get to the market something like this: For a shirt 200N, 1200N for a pair of jeans, 100 for a boxer shorts ... but this one can be sure that everything comes from Altkleiderspenden. For some items sell the huge bags of clothing retailers who sell to dealers out on their own stands.

English
Nigeria's only official language is English. Experiences with people who do not speak English, I made only rarely. Especially here in Lagos, it is necessary to converse in English, as contact with other ethnic groups is difficult to avoid. The spoken English, I would not call it perfect, and differs in some respects from the British or American English, which often depends on the social class of the speaker. Thus, there are many rich Nigerians who have studied in Europe or America or grew up and thus have no Nigerian accent and make no grammatical errors.
